DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF AN ASSISTANT TEACHER
An assistant teacher plays a vital role in the intellectual, moral, physical, social and aesthetic development of the pupils. The main tasks of an assistant teacher are:
• To impart knowledge and skills to bring about intellectual development of the pupils.
• To instil moral and social values in students that are essential to the development of good global citizens.
• To help in the physical development of pupils in order to facilitate healthy living.
In the discharge of their duties and responsibilities, assistant teachers are expected to comply with the following:
• Understand and appreciate the school’s philosophy and impart it to pupils.
• Reinforce School policies, procedures and standards and ensure they are applied and observed.
• Set examples in conduct and decorum.
• Create an optimum atmosphere for learning and interaction in the classroom and monitor the general progress of pupils.
• Adopt a firm but understanding approach in guiding and disciplining students.
As members of staff, assistant teachers are expected to:
• Work in close co-operation and harmony with other members of staff in the interests and needs of students.
• Develop interest in professional advancement by improving their skills, knowledge and methodology.
• Promote school projects.
• Help maintain school discipline.
• Abide by the directives of the School and Senior Management regarding national, educational and other policies.
• Accept duties assigned by the Principal.
Assistant teachers support all lessons delivered by foreign teachers up to a maximum of 40 lessons/week. The support role includes the following:
• Support communication between foreign teachers and parents of Vietnamese students and vice versa.
• Assist with the delivery of lessons by helping to keep students on task and supporting individual students or small groups of students to achieve the lesson objectives in cooperation with and guidance from the foreign teacher.
• Assisting in other classrooms as directed by the School Principal to support students with high needs.
• Escort their students to and from lessons and activities in other school locations such as music, swimming, library, canteen, etc.
• Assisting the foreign teacher with photocopying and preparation of materials and resources for lessons.
Assistant teachers do not have responsibility for the marking of assignments, class work or homework but can assist to monitor the completion of work by students and collection and distribution of student work and assignments. The foreign teacher is responsible for the marking and evaluation of all student work in their class.
